Balloon Blow-Up

Steps:

1.  Pour about an inch of liquid-half vinegar, half water-into the bottle. 1395836218447 1395836231375 1395836223643

2.  Use the funnel to fill the balloon half full of baking soda. (If you don’t have a funnel, you can use a straw to load the balloon. Stick the straw into the baking soda, and put your finger over the top of the straw. Lift the straw out, put it into the balloon, and blow or tap gently.)

3. Stretch the open end of the balloon over the neck of the bottle. Make sure it’s on tight! Let the heavy end of the balloon dangle so no baking soda goes in the bottle. 1395836233380  1395836235366  1395836237142  1395836243127

4.  Hold onto the balloon at the bottle neck, and pick up the heavy part of the balloon so that all the baking soda falls into the vinegar at the bottom of the bottle.

5.  Wow! There are thousands of bubbles! And look at what’s happening to the balloon.

Findings:

1.  The balloon was filled up with air as soon as the baking soda fell into the liquid.  1395836245264

2.  The air was not enough to blow up the balloon, which can be blown up bigger. (Maybe the baking soda or the liquid wasn’t enough.)

3.  We used the same liquid and added more baking soda to do the experiment again, but the air was less than the first time’s air. So we think the liquid just can be use one time. If you want to do “it” again, you need to prepare new liquid.

Discussion:

1.  The balloon was filled with CO2, that made by baking soda and vinegar. (NaHCO3 + CH3COOH   CH3COONa + H2O + CO2)

2.  The liquid can use to wash the washing machine. IMG_1845544453299  Screenshot_2014-03-26-20-36-51

Raisin City Music Hall

Steps:

1.  Get a bottle of soda, and shake as hard as you can. 1395836272561  1395836276769  1395836279567

2.  Knock sharply on the top two or three times.

3.  Open it. Watch out!

4.  Pour the soda into acontainer, and drop some raisins in it. 1395836282972  1395836285712  1395836289429

5.  Watch the raisins dancing.  1395836291512

6.  Do “it” again, but this time try to tap thecontainer and compare the two times’ result.

Findings:

1.  The raisins bounced up and down in the soda.

2.  When we tapping the container, the raisins sank.

3.  If we tap the container, the raisins will dance less time than we don’t tap it.

Discussion:

1.  Because of the CO2 came from the soda, the raisins can dance in the soda.

2.  Although the raisins sank, the bubbles went up to support the raisins.

3.  When the “air” got rid of the soda the raisins all sank.
